Using the generator
Enter your GS1 Company Prefix and an item reference — the check digit is calculated automatically and shown live as you type. Or switch to Batch to paste a list of GTINs (with or without the check digit — it's verified or added for you) or build a serial range from a prefix. Every barcode renders with the true packshot layout, and you can download each as a PNG, grab the whole sheet, or print it.
Which number do I have?
- GTIN-13 (EAN-13) — the standard retail product code almost everywhere outside North America: 13 digits.
- GTIN-12 (UPC-A) — the North American 12-digit retail code; visually identical layout.
- GTIN-8 (EAN-8) — the short 8-digit code GS1 issues for very small packs.
- UPC-E — a compressed 6-digit code for tiny packages; it expands to a full GTIN-12 at the till.
Don't have a GS1 number yet? You'll need one to use retail barcodes in stores — join your local GS1 member organisation to get a company prefix. You can still generate and test designs here with sample numbers.
Sizing and printing
The magnification slider follows the GS1 print specification — 80% to 200% of nominal size (100% ≈ 37.3 mm wide for GTIN-13). Keep the printed barcode inside that range, keep the quiet zones clear, and print dark bars on a light background. If a code won't scan, work through our barcode won't scan checklist.
From a sheet of codes to a labelled inventory
This tool makes retail codes for your product artwork. When you need those codes on labels tied to live records — printed in bulk straight to a Zebra or thermal printer — Label Studio designs one label and merges your whole product list in a single run.
Need more than 10 at a time?
Bulk GTIN generation — up to 500 per run — is included with any Find Asset plan or Label Studio plan.

Is the GTIN generator free? Yes — up to 10 barcodes per generation, with downloads and printing included. Generating more than 10 in one run requires a premium account: any paid Find Asset plan or a Label Studio (FindAsset Studio) plan unlocks bulk generation of up to 500 per run.
Does it add the check digit? Yes — type 12 digits for GTIN-13 (11 for UPC-A, 7 for EAN-8) and the check digit is calculated and appended. Paste a full 13-digit number and it's verified instead; a wrong check digit is flagged.
Why do the guard bars look longer? That's authentic. GS1 retail barcodes have three guard bars that descend below the data bars, with the digits embedded between them — exactly how your code will look on a real pack.
Can I use these numbers on products? Only if the company prefix is yours. Retail numbers must be licensed from GS1 — this tool renders whatever number you enter, so test with your own prefix or GS1's published sample numbers.
