How to make QR codes that scan reliably

QR codes hold more data than a barcode and scan from any angle with a phone camera — ideal for asset tags anyone can scan to look something up.

Using the generator

Enter a URL, text or an asset ID and the QR renders live. Switch to Batch to make many at once from a list or a serial range, then download the sheet or print it. In Formatting you can set the size, colours, quiet-zone margin and the error-correction level.

What is error correction?

QR codes have built-in redundancy so they still scan when partly dirty or damaged. Higher levels (Q or H) tolerate more damage but pack the modules tighter, so the code looks busier. Level M (15%) is a good default; use H (30%) for tags exposed to wear, and L (7%) when you need the simplest possible pattern. The technology is described in this overview of QR codes.

QR vs barcode — which for assets?

A 1-D barcode is compact and best with a laser scanner; a QR code holds more and scans with any phone — better when anyone should be able to look up an asset. Our guide on QR vs 1-D barcodes covers the trade-offs. For hands-free scanning at scale, see the free RFID generator.

Static vs dynamic

The codes here are static — the data is encoded directly, so they never expire and need no third-party service. If you want a QR that always resolves to an asset's live record (and updates as the asset changes), that's what Find Asset does: every asset gets a QR linked to its profile.

Turn a QR into a live asset record

Find Asset gives every asset a QR that opens its full profile — location, custodian, maintenance and history.
